MPs have voted by 397 in favour (and 113 against) to force cigarette manufacturers to use plain packaging on their boxes.
BBC Radio’s health magazine Inside Health looked at the Australian experience where this has already been implemented.
Evidence from Australia indicates that the following has been observed since switching to plain packaging:
- A reduction in young people taking up smoking.
- More established smokers are giving up.
- Fear-mongering myths promoted by the tobacco industry, such as an increase in counterfeit cigarette trade, have not come true.
